In her ceremonial role, the Governor attends the Ceremonial Openings of Parliament which typically take place following a general election.

To ensure that Parliament was able to resume more swiftly following the recent election, today the 52nd Parliament was opened by Commissioners appointed by Letters Patent.  As a result, the usual ceremonial aspects, including a speech read by the Governor, did not take place.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day - August 2025

Vietnam Veterans’ Day

The Governor, in her ceremonial role, represents the people of Tasmania at important national commemorations, including Vietnam Veterans’ Day.

In the morning, she laid a wreath and addressed the Vietnam Veterans’ Day Commemorative Service at the Hobart Cenotaph.

More than 60,000 Australians served during the Vietnam War; 523 died and almost 2,400 were wounded.

Pakistani Australian Cultural Organisation - August 2025

Pakistani Australian Cultural Organisation

In the evening the Governor hosted the Pakistani Australian Cultural Organisation (PACO) at Government House for a reception to mark the Independence Day of Pakistan.

In the her community engagement role, the Governor enjoys welcoming Tasmanians from all cultural backgrounds to Government House to celebrate their important occasions and significant events.

Speaking to guests, the Governor recognised the contributions of Tasmania’s Pakistani community. According to the 2021 census, 1,469 people in Tasmania identified as being born in Pakistan.

Mr Daniher is visiting Hobart as part of the ‘Tour of Honour’, which celebrates Australian of the Year nominees and recipients.

The Governor welcomed Her Excellency Mrs Ingrid Dahl-Madsen, Ambassador of Denmark to Australia, to stay on Tuesday.

Her Excellency was in the State on an official visit, meeting Tasmanian officials and visiting local businesses.

In the evening the Governor and Professor Chalmers hosted a formal dinner in Her Excellency’s honour in the Government House dining room.

In the morning at Government House, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers hosted a visit by Grade 6 students from Port Sorell Primary School in the State’s North West, who are currently on their school camp.

The students had the chance to hear from the Governor about her role and to ask some insightful questions, before enjoying morning tea followed by a tour of the Government House State Rooms.

In the afternoon the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, received His Excellency Mr Pham Hung Tam, Ambassador of Vietnam to Australia, and an accompanying delegation at Government House.

The Governor and Professor Chalmers enjoyed afternoon tea with His Excellency and the delegation in the Government House conservatory as they heard more about the relationship between Tasmania and Vietnam.

Installation of The Most Reverend Anthony John Ireland

In her community engagement role, the Governor joins with Tasmanians from all faiths and cultures to mark their significant milestones and important occasions.

Later she joined Tasmania’s Catholic community at St Mary’s Cathedral for the installation of the new Archbishop of Hobart.

Archbishop Tony Ireland was appointed to the role by Pope Leo XIV in June.

In the evening the Governor was delighted to host a reception at Government House to mark National Science Week as it got underway in Tasmania.

Science teachers and students from southern Tasmanian schools, as well as representatives from the University of Tasmania, joined together to celebrate a week of exciting events.

In the afternoon at Government House, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, presided over the swearing-in of the Premier, the Honourable Jeremy Rockliff MP, and his Cabinet.

A key part of the Governor’s role is officiating at important State ceremonies, including swearing in the Premier and Cabinet Ministers.
